Publication Alert – The Perceived Causes of Problems with Substance Use, Gambling, and Other Behavioural Addictions

Congratulations to Sophie Coelho on her recent publication, “The Perceived Causes of Problems with Substance Use, Gambling, and Other Behavioural Addictions from the Perspective of People with Lived Experience: A Mixed-Methods Investigation,” published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.

This study examined whether the perceived causes of substance use, gambling, and other behavioural addictions were similar across addictions or differed depending on the individual’s lived experiences. The research drew on secondary data from the Quinte Longitudinal Study of Gambling and Problem Gambling (Williams et al., 2015).

What Did We Find?

  • Perceived causes were broadly similar across different types of addictions, though the relative proportions varied.
  • Coping emerged as the most commonly cited perceived cause, highlighting a significant interaction between addiction and mental health.
